What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

What AEO means, how AI engines pick what to say, what the work involves, and how to measure it, with sources for every number.

Key takeaways

  • AEO is the work of getting your company named, cited, and described correctly in AI answers.
  • AEO, GEO, and AI SEO describe the same goal. The names are still settling.
  • Google says AI Overviews need no special files or schema, so AEO starts with SEO basics.
  • Mentions on other sites correlate with AI visibility far more than backlinks do.
  • AI answers vary between runs, so measure percentages across repeated runs, not single answers.

What answer engine optimization means

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your company named, cited, and described correctly in AI-generated answers, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode. It applies the discipline of SEO to answers instead of rankings.

In search, the unit of success is a position on a results page. In an answer engine, there is no page of ten links to rank on. There is one written answer, and your company is either in it or not. If it is in it, the answer may describe you correctly or get your prices, rates, or features wrong.

So AEO asks three questions about the questions your buyers type:

  • Does the answer mention you?
  • Does it cite one of your pages as a source?
  • Is what it says about you true?

How answer engines choose what to say

Most answer engines now search the web before they answer. The model rewrites the question into several searches, reads the pages that come back, and writes an answer from them. Google describes this for AI Overviews and AI Mode as a "query fan-out" technique, "issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources."1

That gives you two ways into an answer:

  • A citation, when the engine links one of your pages as a source for what it said
  • A mention, when the engine names your company, often because other sites it read named you

The two don't always travel together. An engine can cite your guide without recommending you, or recommend you while citing a review site, a directory, or a forum thread instead of your own pages. Good AEO work tracks both.

AEO, GEO, and AI SEO are mostly the same work

The names are still settling. Answer engine optimization, generative engine optimization (GEO), AI SEO, and LLM optimization all describe the same goal: being part of AI answers.

GEO comes from a 2023 research paper by Princeton and Georgia Tech researchers, published at KDD 2024. The authors tested ways of rewriting web content and reported that the best methods could raise a source's visibility in generative engine responses "by up to 40%."2 That number came from a lab benchmark, not live ChatGPT traffic, but it showed that how a page is written changes whether an engine uses it.

In practice, agencies and tools use the terms interchangeably. We use AEO and GEO together, and you can read our comparison of AEO, SEO, and GEO for where they differ.

What changed in Google search

Google's AI Overviews put an answer above the links, and that changes who gets the click.

  • In a Pew Research Center study of 68,879 searches by 900 US adults in March 2025, people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when none did. They clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits.3
  • Ahrefs found that an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower average click-through rate for the page in position one, based on 300,000 keywords in December 2025.4
  • Seer Interactive found that brands cited in an AI Overview earned about 120% more organic clicks per impression than brands that were not cited on the same kind of results page, from January 2025 to February 2026.5

Clicks are falling for everyone, and the companies that the answer cites keep more of what is left. That is the commercial case for AEO.

Google's own guidance is that "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary."1 The pages that appear are pages that can be crawled, indexed, and shown with a snippet. That is why AEO starts with SEO basics, not with special files or markup.

What AEO work involves

AEO is not one tactic. It is five kinds of work, usually in this order:

  1. Access. Make sure AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot can reach your pages, and that the content is in the HTML rather than loaded by JavaScript. Our AI crawler checker tests this.
  2. Facts. Put your prices, rates, fees, features, and eligibility rules on crawlable pages in plain sentences, and keep them the same everywhere they appear.
  3. Answer-shaped pages. Write pages that answer the questions buyers ask, with a direct answer near the top, specific numbers, and named sources an engine can quote.
  4. Off-site mentions. Get named on the review sites, comparison articles, directories, and forums that engines read. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, brand web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, compared with 0.218 for backlinks.6
  5. Corrections. Find what engines get wrong about you and fix the sources they learned it from.

The first three happen on your own site. The fourth is closer to PR than to SEO, and it is usually where the biggest gains are.

How to measure AEO

AI answers change from run to run. In a SparkToro study of 2,961 queries run by 600 volunteers in late 2025, there was less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI would give the same list of brands in any two responses.7 Ranking position inside an answer is close to meaningless. Percentages across many runs are not.

Four AEO measures and how to read them
MeasureWhat it countsHow to read it
Mention rateShare of answers that name youRun each question at least three times and report a range
Citation rateShare of answers that link one of your pagesTells you which of your pages engines trust
Share of voiceYour mentions compared with competitors' mentionsOnly meaningful across the same question set
AccuracyShare of statements about you that are correctThe measure regulated companies care about most

Our free AI visibility checker runs the first three for your category, and the AI accuracy checker covers the fourth.

What AEO looks like in finance

In financial services, the problem is less often "AI doesn't mention us" and more often "AI says something wrong about us." Rates, fees, and limits change, and engines repeat whatever they read last.

When Which? tested five AI tools on 15 personal finance questions in July 2026, aggregate scores ranged from 60% for ChatGPT and Perplexity to 68% for Gemini. The testers found made-up figures and outdated tax rates.8 That study covered UK consumer questions, but the failure modes carry over.

Example answer, written for illustrationAI assistant

Which mortgage lender near Albany has the lowest 30-year fixed rate?

Several lenders in the Albany area offer 30-year fixed mortgages. Example Home Loans lists rates starting around 6.1%, though rates depend on credit, down payment, and points. Check current rates on each lender’s site before applying.

The rate in an answer like this can be months old. AEO for a lender means making the current rate easy to read, dated, and consistent everywhere.

For a regulated company, AEO adds a review step: every fact you publish for engines to read is also a fact your compliance team has to approve. We build that step into how we work.

Where to start this week

  1. Write down 20 questions a buyer would ask before choosing a company like yours.
  2. Ask them in ChatGPT, Claude, and Google, three times each, and note who gets named.
  3. Check that AI crawlers can reach your site with the crawler checker.
  4. List every price, rate, and fee AI states about you, and mark the wrong ones.
  5. Find the five sites engines cite most for your questions, and decide how to get named on them.

The free checker does steps 1 and 2 for you in about a minute. If you want the whole picture with a ranked fix list, that is our AI search audit.

Questions people ask

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but it is built on it. SEO earns rankings and clicks. AEO earns mentions and citations inside AI answers. Most AI answers are written from pages that already rank, so a site with weak SEO rarely does well in AEO.

Is AEO different from GEO?

No, not in practice. Generative engine optimization comes from a 2023 research paper, and answer engine optimization comes from the earlier work on featured snippets and voice answers. Both describe getting your company into AI-generated answers.

Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file to appear in AI Overviews?

No, Google says there are no additional requirements and no special schema or AI text files needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data still helps engines read facts such as prices correctly.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Fixes to crawler access and on-site facts can show up within weeks, once engines re-read the pages. Off-site mentions usually take two to six months, because they depend on other sites publishing.

Can a small firm do AEO without a paid tool?

Yes, for a start. Twenty buyer questions asked three times each in two or three engines will show where you stand. Tools help once you need to track hundreds of questions over time.

How do I know if ChatGPT mentions my company?

Ask it the questions your buyers ask, several times each, and count how often you are named. Our free AI visibility checker does this across ChatGPT and Claude for your category.
